Professor Marcos Santos is the Owner and Head Instructor at Marcos Santos Academy. He was the east coast representative for the Machado brothers, nephews of Grand Master Carlos Gracie Sr. and Grand Master Helio Gracie.

Marcos began training Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the age of 7, and has had the incredible opportunity of training with many of Brazil’s top instructors. The philosophy of Gracie Jiu Jitsu is within every aspect of his life, not just as a method of combat. Professor Marcos believes that a healthy lifestyle, which includes proper nutrition and a positive mental attitude, must be the base from which self-defense and self-awareness begin.

With over 40 years training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and almost 20 years running an academy in the USA, Marcos has achieved a level of experience that few can match. Since opening his first NYC academy in 1997, he has taught a wide range of students from ages 5 to 72.

Giving back to the community is of the utmost importance to Marcos. In addition to teaching at his own academy, he has conducted over 200 seminars for a variety of organizations including the NYPD, other professional law enforcement, military personnel, and security. He has participated in culture and career day events at local schools, and established bully prevention and after school programs to provide young people with a positive environment to grow as individuals.

Marcos’ NYC academy, located across the street from the World Trade Center was shut down due to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. He subsequently moved to Fort Worth, Texas where he owns and operates a Machado BJJ Academy. He strives to build a team of tough competitors not only on the mat, but in life.

He received his fifth degree black belt under the Machado brothers and is humbled by the opportunity to change people’s lives and grow as a human being.

Coach Hugo Muñoz is Assistant Head Instructor and no gi specialist at Marcos Santos Academy. He prides himself in educating and influencing children, both on and off the mat. Coach Muñoz believes the discipline and mentality that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives children impacts their lives forever. He emphasizes that the athletic development and life lessons taught at the academy will help kids with things such as confidence, discipline, respect, integrity and focus.

Thanks to his extensive wrestling background, Hugo sees Jiu Jitsu techniques from a unique perspective. He has an amazing ability to adapt techniques, add his own perspective, and explain minute details. Everyone who practices or competes with Hugo knows that his “funky” Jiu Jitsu game is a nightmare to deal with.

Through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Coach Muñoz was reconnected with his passion to teach children and will complete his Bachelor’s Degree in early childhood Education from Texas Tech in the summer of 2017. Hugo is a certified Texas teacher and is looking forward to his time in the classroom this fall at Diamond Hill Elementary.

Hugo earned his brown belt in November 2014.

Coach Eddie Hudson is an enthusiastic Instructor and the individual attention he gives to each student makes the kids’ class a cornerstone of the Marcos Santos Academy.

Since beginning wrestling at age 12 in the Texas panhandle, he has participated in freestyle, Greco, and collegiate competitions. He was a member of the Paschal High School wrestling team for four years and attended the John Smith wrestling camp at OSU.

Coach Eddie earned his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in December 2015.

Coach Victor Perales has been wrestling since the 10th grade and was a freshman walk-on at Iowa State University. He participated in club wrestling at TCU for two years and went on to earn a Master’s degree from TCU in 2012.

Due to his wrestling background, Vic caught on quickly to the techniques of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and is now a purple belt. In addition to BJJ, he has been practicing Praying Mantis Kung Fu for the past year.

Victor is passionate about working with kids. He is a social worker at Arlington ISD and works with at risk youth, helping to guide and encourage them toward a positive future. In the evenings, he assists with the kids’ classes at the academy and has a great rapport with the students.

Coach Matthew Handy, nicknamed “Mateo”, is also an Instructor and has been practicing martial arts since the age of 14. His first arts were Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA, but he has some experience in a variety of disciplines from around the globe.

Originally from Springfield, Illinois, he took an interest in self-defense in real life scenarios under the tutelage of Steve Fristoe, a student of Tony Blauer and Dan Inosanto.

Upon moving to Fort Worth in 2015, Mateo became a certified Texas teacher and is currently working on his Master’s degree at Texas A&M Commerce. He is studying applied linguistics with an emphasis on teaching English as a foreign language.

In December 2015, Coach Matthew earned his purple belt from Professor Marcos Santos.
