Frequently Asked Questions

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Q: "Should I get in shape before signing up?"

No way! If you're not already in shape, our classes are the fastest, funnest way to get there. Guaranteed.

Q: "Will a medical condition / past injury interfere with participating in BJJ?"

Probably not. But we advise speaking with your doctor first. He / she will know better than anyone - and may be able to tell us what exercises you can & can't do.

Q: "Do people get injured a lot in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?"

Not at all! You'll be training in an extremely supportive, safe environment. No one wants to hurt anyone - and no one wants to get hurt. While injuries happen from time to time (just like with any sport), they're the exception - not the rule.

Q: "Can women take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?"

Absolutely. And even though it's a close-contact sport, there's never any awkwardness or uncomfortableness between genders. Everyone is just focused on having a great training experience. And because you'll be paired up with people of your skill level and size, gender doesn't even make a difference.

Q: "What's the class-environment like? Fun? Serious? Etc.?"

Our classes are a mixture of supportive, fun, serious, focused and goofy. There are moments of intense concentration... moments of fun & games... moments of encouraging one another to keep going, and do your best... and so much more. It's a vibrant blend of fun, focus and passion.

Q: "Are these classes only for competitive BJJ?"

Not at all. We have a good blend of competitive guys, hobbyists, and people just looking for a kick-ass workout.

Q: "Will these classes help me get an edge for my upcoming competitive matches?"

Definitely. Our expert instructors will work with you to strengthen any weaknesses you have, exploit your strengths, improve your physical fitness and master your technique. Your opponents won't know what hit' em.

Kids Martial Arts

Q: “Does Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do make kids violent?”

No way! Martial arts is about peace, harmony and diplomacy. It teaches children how to AVOID fights - not pick them.

Q: “Can my child get injured with Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do?”

As a parent, I'm sure you've seen that kids can get injured doing just about anything. Martial Arts is no different, however we take safety very seriously here. Yes, injuries do sometimes happen. But we do everything in our power to avoid them. We do special exercises and stretches to make your child's body limber and flexible.

Q: “Do boys AND girls take Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do?”

Yes! We have a good mix of both girls and boys in our kids martial arts classes! Some people think that the boys are much “stronger and tougher,” but in reality this is not true. In fact, often girls are the stronger ones!

Q: “My child isn't athletic. Can they still participate in Martial Arts, Karate, Tae Kwon Do if they're not athletic?”

Yes! In fact, martial arts is a beacon of light for kids who just don't fit into team sports. Kids who couldn’t throw a ball well or run fast find that martial arts is accessible to them. It's something they excel at, and as a result, their confidence soars. Plus...no one is left out or sits the bench at Marcos Santos Academy! We make sure everyone gets personal time to work on specific needs for success!

Q: “Do kids enjoy Martial Arts like Karate? Do they stick with it for a while?”

Kids have a blast here. There's smiling and laughter throughout every class. We have our moments of intense concentration and focus... but we always balance things out with fun and games to keep everything alive and light.

Q: “Do children's confidence & self-esteem grow with Martial Arts like Karate?”

Absolutely. Kids with low self-esteem often come out of their shells. As their skill level increases, they feel more and more confident. Other kids look up to them, just as they look up to other kids who are ahead of them. It builds a sense of confidence, pride, and teamwork.

Q: “What's a good age for a child to start Martial Arts like Karate?”

Honestly, practically every age is a good age to start! We have children as young as 3 years old, as well as teenagers. We also have specific programs for adults. So no matter where you or your child is on the age spectrum - we've got you covered.
